Grant Money for Community Food Projects

Want to start a food project in your town? Know someone who does? Trying to get your local one going?

Parke Wilde points readers to the Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service’s announcement about grants for community food projects. The government has allotted $4.6 million for winning grants, so get your proposal in by April 13.

Of course, this is a minuscule amount of money for an important issue, but a little bit of cash could be the difference between a successful community food project and a distant memory. I find it interesting that some of the money might go to projects focused on food security issues. As terror-mania has gripped the U.S. for the last few years, a number of experts have pointed to our highly centralized food distribution system as a weak point. Little has been done about these criticisms—as security expert Bruce Schneier often says, our post-9/11 security measures assume terrorists will do the exact same thing next time—but this category of grants suggests that some people at the federal level see the importance of local foodsheds. I’ll bet you could get lots of grant money by suggesting your local food project is a weapon in the War Against Terror.
