EU to Limit Advertising To Children

In an effort to curb a growing obesity epidemic, the European Union and the Union of European Beverages Associations have put a stop to soft drink marketing aimed at kids. Companies will not run ads in any media outlet aimed specifically at the under-12 market. Commercial activity in primary schools will stop outright unless the school requests it. In secondary schools, drinks will be sold in smaller containers. Similar laws are already on the books in countries like Sweden, but the new law affects the entire EU.

Bravo! Commercially made soda is unhealthy on many levels, from its use of High Fructose Corn Syrup to its dehydrating effects. Producers have often marketed heavily to children, who are particularly susceptible to advertising messages. This is a radical move by soft drink manufacturers, and I for one applaud the initiative.

Now if we could just enact similar laws in the United States.
