New York Times and the Future of GMO

Andrew Pollack wrote a piece about the next generation of genetically modified organisms for the New York Times. New genetically engineered foods will go beyond the “herbicide resistance and pest control” that has dominated the field for the last ten years. Instead, they’ll offer the health benefits that idealists have long envisioned. Hypoallergenic soybeans, omega-3 fatty acids in produce instead of fish, and so forth.

Pollack points out that companies like Monsanto have faced unexpected opposition to GMOs, while smaller companies struggle with financial challenges and legal wrangling against the large corporations that hold patents on crucial techniques. Still, many companies hope that GMOs with health benefits will win over a skeptical public.

It’s worth the read to see what’s coming down the GMO pipe, for better and worse.
