Chiquita, Tell Me What’s Wrong

The eGullet community is abuzz over Chiquita’s decision to sell single-serving, individually wrapped bananas. You’re probably thinking the same thing I did when I read the article: How does this differ from normal bananas?

They’re not talking banana peels. Chiquita wants to use a new wrapping material that keeps the fruit at optimal ripeness for a longer period of time. And they want to push those single-serving bananas beyond the grocery store and onto the shelves of convenience stores, where they’ll sell for 75 to 99 cents.

Though some eGulleteers are skeptical, I think it’s a great idea to promote fruit in stores better known for chips and cookies. Sure, the bananas won’t be local, or organic, or any of those special things. But they’ll be available to shoppers who might opt for fruit chews only because fruit isn’t there.

Chiquita is testing the program, with a larger rollout planned in the coming year. Keep an eye out at your local 7-11.

I’ll try one. But I like well-ripened bananas. I sure hope they don’t do away with bananas in the natural packaging.
