Organic Food Markets in France

An article on BonjourParis.com gives an in-depth view of French food markets that counters some frequent assumptions. Yes, France is still the European market capital, with around 36,000 marketplaces. But the role of markets has decreased dramatically with the increase of women who work outside of the home and the plethora of ready-made dishes offered in French supermarkets.

Surprisingly, the current fascination with organic and local foods has not necessarily been favorable to organic food markets. In fact, the author, Hannah Crown, points out that supermarkets have jumped on the organic food bandwagon and undercut local markets on organic produce and products. Crown also reports that the French are more price-conscious these days, a pinch being felt by the vendors at organic markets in Paris.
