Corporations Still Can’t Escape AZ Regulation
Cynics will be surprised to learn that Arizona’s state legislature killed a corporation-friendly bill. The new law would have required a constitutional amendment for any regulations that would affect the state’s food-production industry.
The article reports that state Senator Jake Flake “was trying to elevate the importance of the food-production industry by giving it constitutional protection from regulation by those who are not experts in the field.” But the article points out that the original text of the bill would have overturned the Humane Farms Initiative, which requires slighly larger pens for pigs and chickens, the most inhumanely raised livestock animals. The state’s only pork facility is in Flake’s district, by the way. It’s probably just a coincidence.
The law may seem laughably transparent, but the final vote was 15-12. Expect more subtle attacks to hit the floor in the near future.
