French Cheese Threatened by Changing Habits

Say it ain’t so, Pierrot! Not only are the French drinking less wine, they are also eating less cheese. A short report in the local news site @mbert info reveals that raw milk cheese consumption is steadily declining in France. Despite France’s approximately 500 types of fromage, cheese is becoming more uniform as consumers purchase it in supermarkets rather than in specialized shops.

This decline has especially hurt blue cheeses. The article, written in the region which produces Fourme d’Ambert blue cheese, advises shoppers to patronize cheese shops where they can get advice on how to serve and store cheese. It also points out that cheese-makers are creating cheese-tasting clubs to teach consumers about cheese. Apparently this knowledge is no longer an inherent element of French culture.

Growing up with a Parisian-born mother, we grew to love Brie, Bleu Cheese, Camembert, Port Salut and many others. No cheese-eating habits changing in our household. ;)
