Eat Local in May
One of the basic tenets of Growers and Grocers is that shoppers have a right to information about the food they buy. Choosing what to eat is one of the most political things we do in modern society: Your food dollars vote for fragile agriculture, exploitive practices, and poor quality.
For the month of May, a group of thoughtful cooks and eaters will try to eat foods grown within a 100-mile radius of their homes. You’ll find their accounts and thoughts at eatlocalchallenge.com. Participants can choose how strict they want to be: Few are giving up coffee and tea, for instance.
But every member of the group spends a hefty chunk of each day thinking about where their food comes from, and how much of it travels from afar. The challenge is thought-provoking for participants and readers alike.
Eat Local participants are changing their votes, opting for the best candidate instead of the one who speaks the loudest. Locally grown food is fresher. Locally grown food is more sustainable. Locally grown food is better for your local economy.
