USDA Toes the Line on Food Advice
The ever-vigilant Parke Wilde at the U.S. Food Policy blog has spotted an unusual report from a subdepartment of the USDA. The report puts forth the common wisdom that Americans eat too many solid fats, alcohol, and added sugars (SoFAAs).
So what? The USDA is notoriously squeamish about telling Americans to eat less of anything. Beef and dairy lobbyists work hard and pay well to keep the USDA from providing real information about food. Perhaps the most famous example is the food pyramid, which included a larger-than-recommended section for meat because the beef industry demanded it.
I hope this suggests change in American food policy, but I think it really suggests trouble for someone on the government payroll.
