This is a Farmer’s Market?

Construction crews broke the ground on a future State Farmers Market in Columbia, South Carolina. Given that most markets around me in the Bay Area happen in parks or other public places, I had to wonder how you “break ground” for a new site.

Turns out the future State Farmer’s Market is a little bit more than the collection of stalls and so-so musicians that come to my mind. The article in the Southeast Farm Press suggests that the new facility will showcase state agriculture, provide onsite lab services, and, oh right, feature a retail area where shoppers can buy produce for the week. The new facility sounds like a department at the university, which bought the land hosting the market.

It sounds like they are modeling a bit after the Dekalb Farmers Market in Hotlanta. If you ever get a chance you have GOT to go and visit. When I went back in the extra poor grad school days (90-94) it was a great place to get excellent samosas and real indian chai (before all these new fangled chais you get at starbucks etc).

Their link is http://www.dekalbfarmersmarket.com/

On some days you could walk through the produce section (massive) and eat samples till you drop.

They also had a massive beer and wine section.

Yep, that Dekalb farmers market is famous (”farmous”) in the South, Derrick. One of the best. It’s been decades since I visited as a little girl, but I remember being overwhelmed even then. I’d probably have a seizure if I went there now.
