Turkey Talk

Thanksgiving is heading at us fast, and it’s time to talk turkey.  Although Butterball Turkeys are good, if you have your eye on free range, organic or other options, here’s a few to get you started.

Diestel Turkey Ranch.  They offer free-range organic turkeys that are:

Range grown and raised longer: Diestel turkeys enjoy the freedom of being range grown in the clean Sierra Foothills with individual care where they are raised longer (approximately 6 months) to develop flavor naturally – real flavor from real time.Diestel turkeys are fed a wholesome low fat vegetarian diet of quality grains and soybeans milled on the ranch – free of growth stimulants and hormones.

Mary’s Turkeys.  Free-range, free-range organic and free-range, organic and heritage turkeys are all available. In existence since 1954, their turkeys are free from antibiotics, animal by-products, hormones, preservatives and additives.

And lastly, Local Harvest has certified organic, pasture-raised turkeys available, and you can also find small-scale turkey farmers (and plenty of other information) on their site.

We had a Diestel turkey last thanksgiving….Delicious. Plus you feel good about what you’re buying. More expensive, yes, but worth it.

It is also worthwhile to check into your local food system, such as it exists. Local Harvest also has a great search function to locate nearby farms & retailers. Check with the food co-op in your community, they may be offering turkeys on advance order (mine is). Your Slow Food chapter may offer some guidance as well.
This year I found a local farm couple who have three different kinds of heritage turkeys. We’ll be having a Blue Slate on our Thanksgiving table.

The local high end market works with a local turkey grower to get
* Free-range
* Raised without antibiotics
* Raised without hormones or growth stimulants
* Vegetarian-fed – with no animal by-products in the feed
* Locally grown and raised on a small family farm

And I know it’s GOOD stuff! I go with these every year… there’s definitely a difference.
