Sticks and Stones Can Make My Pizza Anytime
This weekend we took a green field trip to Greensboro, NC, which is about an hour away from my house in Durham. Our goal was to eat dinner at a new organic pizza place we found out about called Sticks and Stones. Located at 2200 Walker Avenue, you can contact them at 336-275-0220 if you have any questions about ingredients or directions.
How could we not go after reading this from their website?
We use all-natural, free-range beef and pork from Cane Creek Farm in Snow Camp, NC. Our fresh milk, cream, and butter, all of which are free of hormones and antibiotics, are provided by Homeland Creamery in Julian, NC. The goat cheese is from the Goat Lady Dairy in Climax, NC. We receive much of our local, organic produce from the farmer’s market on Yanceyville St. as well as from farms in eastern North Carolina via Eastern Carolina Organics, letting the season dictate available selections. Fresh herbs are picked fresh from the beds right outside our door. The cornerstone of the pizza, the dough, is prepared fresh in-house using locally milled, organic flour from Lindley Mills in Eli Whitney, NC.
It was like a dream come true. Local ingredients, organic veggies, and no fear of hormones or antibiotics in my food - this was a trip I needed to make. Of course I brought a few friends along, so it felt like more like an adventure.
Once we got there, we were not disappointed. They have a wood-fired clay oven that they cook the pizza in, and an artsy decor that’s a pleasure to be in. Take a look at the photo gallery at their website to get an idea of just how cozy it is.
I had an eggplant pizza called A Kiss Before I Go. It had tomato sauce, fried eggplant, wild mushrooms, mozzarella, caramelized garlic, fresh basil, and Parmesan. The herb mixture was perfect and made my pizza tastier than the meat eaters (or at least that’s what they told me.)
The meat eaters got a pepperoni one. They said they would order extra cheese next time, but were in love with the pepperoni itself. The cheese was a little lighter than a ‘normal’ pizza, but in the case of the eggplant pizza it allowed all the flavors to shine on their own.
We had to try a little of Homeland Creamery’s ice cream and ate some vanilla with the cookie of the day. The cookie was great, full of chocolate chips and pretzels that added that salty taste that balanced out our dessert. I’ll be going back and you should definitely stop by if you’re in the area.
